A Plucky Little Fox Sparrow

Spry, charming and brave, this Fox Sparrow defies the typical behaviour of a small bird. It did not duck for cover or fly into the distance to disappear forever.
Instead, it popped out into plain view, raised its shoulders, stretched its neck, and looked me in the eye. It was no doubt this bird owned this territory.
It is moments like this that win the day. With curious eyes and a happy-go-lucky attitude, this foxy little sparrow lifted my spirits.
Defying the odds to survive and procreate shows just how resilient little creatures can be. Inspirational!
It is so easy to get caught up in the chase to grow a list or see a new bird that we forget it is really engaging moments like this that convert admirers to birders. I stare at the calendar and impatiently away the return of little birds.
