It's no big news really, but after about a six-week hiatus, the finches are returning.
It becomes newsworthy after multiple visits to the woods and finding nothing ... no Purple Finch, no Pine Grosbeaks and no Pine Siskin.
Over the last week, I have seen all of the above species plus the White-winged Crossbill. It sure makes long drives around the outskirts of St. John's much more entertaining to see these flocks of birds topping the trees or flying overhead.
'Tis a welcome sight, indeed!
