Herring Gull - Spring Close-up

Even before the bright colors of early blooming crocus, daffodils or tulips, the seagulls bring some spring colors into view.  Yes, it is important to look closely because the predominance of gray and white can overshadow the brilliant orange eye ring and bill. The pale yellow eye of this Herring Gull seems almost transparent.

The Iceland and Black-headed Gulls are disappearing fast from our frozen lakes and shorelines and are being replaced with the summer breeders, including the great little Ring-billed Gulls. More about them on another day.
